Woodturning
Woodturning is the craft at the heart of the workshop. A single broken baluster on a staircase or a missing finial on a piece of furniture can hold up an entire restoration — and off-the-shelf parts almost never match.
Daniel turns replacements by hand on the lathe, copying the original profile so a new spindle, pilaster or newel post sits among the old ones without drawing the eye. It is patient, exacting work, and one of the trades we are determined to keep alive.

What we do
Spindles, balusters, finials and pilasters turned by hand on the lathe to match an original profile exactly.
- Staircase spindles, balusters and newel posts turned to match
- Pilasters and columns for architectural joinery
- Finials, knobs, feet and turned mouldings for furniture restoration
- Bespoke one-off turnings copied from a sample or photograph
- Matching timbers sourced so new turnings blend with the original work
How it works
From inspection to installation.
- 01
Match the profile
We work from the surviving original, a sample or a measured drawing to capture the exact profile and proportions.
- 02
Source the timber
Matching timber is selected — reclaimed or FSC-certified — so grain and colour sit well alongside the original.
- 03
Turn by hand
Each piece is turned on the lathe and checked against the original until the match is right.
- 04
Finish to match
New turnings are decorated and finished so they blend into the existing work rather than stand apart from it.
Questions
Common questions
- Can you turn a part to match an existing one?
- Yes — copying an original is the core of what we do. Send a surviving spindle, finial or a clear photograph with measurements and we will turn a match by hand on the lathe.
- What kinds of turning do you take on?
- Staircase balusters and newel posts, pilasters and columns, furniture finials, feet and knobs, and bespoke one-off turnings for restoration and architectural joinery.
- What timber do you use?
- We match the original wherever possible, favouring locally reclaimed timber and FSC-certified stock so new turnings blend in and the sourcing stays sustainable.
