Staircase & Spindle Restoration

A period staircase is often the centrepiece of a house, and one broken spindle spoils the whole run. Shop-bought spindles almost never match an old profile, so the repair ends up standing out.

Daniel turns replacement spindles, balusters and newel posts by hand on the lathe, copying the original exactly. We also repair loose handrails, split treads and worn strings, so the staircase is safe and looks as it did.

How it works

From inspection to installation.

  1. 01

    Take a sample

    We work from a surviving spindle or baluster, or measure one in place, to capture the exact profile.

  2. 02

    Match the timber

    Timber is chosen to match the grain and colour of the existing staircase.

  3. 03

    Turn and repair

    New spindles are turned by hand and checked against the original. Handrails, treads and strings are repaired.

  4. 04

    Fit and finish

    New parts are fitted and finished to match, so the repair does not show.

Common questions

Can you match a broken stair spindle?
Yes. Send us a surviving spindle, or a clear photo with measurements, and we will turn a match by hand on the lathe in a suitable timber.
How many spindles can you make?
Anything from a single replacement to a full set for a staircase. Each one is turned and checked against the original profile.
Do you repair the rest of the staircase too?
Yes. We repair handrails, newel posts, treads and strings as well as spindles, and refinish the staircase so it looks consistent.
